Faecal Incontinence

Faecal incontinence, or bowel leakage, is a common yet often unspoken issue that affects many people—especially older women. It can range from occasional leaks to a complete loss of control, and often leads to discomfort, frustration, and a loss of confidence.

Faecal incontinence

Faecal incontinence (commonly known as bowel incontinence) is when bowel movements cannot be controlled efficiently, causing excrement to leak out of the rectum unintentionally, often resulting in discomfort or embarrassment.

This leakage can occur both with or without your knowledge, and is more common among older women than men, however, it is still a regular cause of concern for both.

The term faecal incontinence is used when any of these situations occur:
  • Stool leaks out when passing gas.
  • Stool leaks out due to physical activity/daily life exertions.
  • Feeling the sudden urge and not being able to make it to the bathroom in time.
  • Stool is seen in the underwear after a normal bowel movement.
  • There is a complete loss of bowel control.
