Urinary Incontinence in Men

Urinary leakage, or incontinence, happens when the muscles and nerves that control your bladder stop working as they should. Whether due to age, muscle weakness, or nerve issues, it’s a common condition that can affect anyone—and often worsens over time without support or treatment.

What is urinary incontinence?

Urinary leakage, also known as incontinence, is often a result of the muscles surrounding the urinary sphincter becoming damaged, weakened or out of sync with the muscles in the bladder.

As the bladder fills with urine, nerve signals tell the sphincter to stay squeezed shut whilst the bladder stays relaxed. The nerves and muscles should work together to prevent urine from leaking out of the body, however, in some cases, this bodily function no longer works as it should.

This can happen for many reasons, in different ways:

  • If your bladder squeezes at the wrong time, or too hard, urine may leak out.
  • If the muscles around the urethra are damaged or weak, urine can leak out even if you don’t have a problem with your bladder.
  • If your bladder doesn’t empty when it should, you are left with too much urine in the bladder. If the bladder gets too full, urine may leak out unexpectedly.
Urinary incontinence is the accidental leaking of urine. It’s not a disease. It’s a symptom of a problem with a man’s urinary tract that happens more often in older men than in young men, but it is often a common part of ageing.
